2015 Exhibition:
Danish Cedar Falls: The Immigrant Experience

February 5 - December 6, 2015

The first known Danish immigrants arrived in Cedar Falls in 1855, and by 1871, made up ten percent of the city’s population. Cedar Falls quickly became the second largest Danish community in Iowa, after Elk Horn.

Visit our 2015 exhibition and discover how Danes shaped our community through their traditions, businesses, churches, and civic organizations.

Carrie Eilderts, a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa has curated this show, gathering objects from the Historical Society's collection and around the Cedar Valley. Visitors will get to see artifacts such as model schooners traditionally hung in Danish churches, original copies of the Dannevirke newspaper, published in Cedar Falls, and a costume worn to celebrate Danish culture in a 1932 Olympic performance.

Family-friendly, hands-on activities bring the Danish American experience to life for visitors of all ages. Explore an immigrant trunk packed with items for the oversea voyage, create a traditional Danish heart, and trace the journey from Copenhagen to Cedar Falls.
