Raymond J. Schlicher
In recent weeks, there has been much news about the desperate bidding for delegates by the Republican candidates for President. In Cedar Falls, news is made with less fuss and feathers. An example of a local newsmaker who doesn’t spin his wheels is Raymond J. Schlicher. He has recently completed his term as President of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce without fanfare or fireworks.
Ray was born in Centerville, Iowa. In the fullness of time, he graduated from high school there. With his diploma in hand, he went to Mount Pleasant and received his B. A. degree from Iowa Wesleyan College. The M. A. and Ph.D. degrees were conferred upon him by the University of Iowa.
Dr. Schlicher came to Cedar Falls in 1949 as an Assistant Professor of Education at what was then the Iowa State Teachers College. In successive years, he served as Director of Placement, Director of Extension and Director of Field Services. Currently, he is the Dean of Extension and Continuing Education at UNI. He has been, and continues to be, Chairman of the Athletic Board. Earlier, he was Chairman of the Homecoming Committee and President of the Faculty Men’s Club. Service awards have been bestowed upon him by the North Central Athletic Conference, the Iowa Wesleyan College Alumni Association and the University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association.

In the community at large, Schlicher has been active as chairman of the Red Cross, Chairman of the Community Chest, President of Kiwanis, and as a longtime teacher of the Boardman Boosters, an adult Sunday School class at the First United Methodist Church. The class was named in honor of its founder, Benjamin Boardman.
Raymond Schlicher and his wife, Genevieve, live at 115 West 14th St. Their three children, all of whom graduated from UNI, are John, an M. D. in Wichita, Kansas; Jennifer, who is employed by the Equitable Life Assurance Society in New York City; and Mary, a French teacher in Clarion, Iowa.
