Nancy Redfern

1976 is a year of decision in electing a President. The Cedar Falls Historical Society made its decision by electing Nancy Redfern. She first made news for the Society when she was Membership Chairman. During her service in this appointive post, she enlisted nearly one thousand members. Subsequently, she moved up the administrative ladder to the offices of Secretary and Vice President. In June, when she began her tenure as President, she held the distinction of being the first woman president in the history of the Society.
Nancy Jones grew up in Peru, Neb., where she attended Peru State College and met LeRoy Redfern. After graduation, Nancy and LeRoy were married, but they were separated during wartime by LeRoy’s Navy service. Nancy taught school in Nebraska until the war ended. Then, the couple moved to Ann Arbor, where LeRoy entered law school at the University of Michigan.
In 1948, the Redfern family, now three in number, moved to Cedar Falls. While still in Michigan, Nancy and LeRoy had decided to make their future home in Iowa. After assessing the professional promise of several cities in the state, LeRoy picked Cedar Falls as the place to hang out his shingle. It was a happy choice for the Redferns and the community.

As the family grew, Nancy helped to promote the programs of the Cub Scouts, the Brownies and the PTA. She became a member of the Tuesday Club, President of Chapter KL of PEO, an officer of the Auxiliary to Good Will Industries, a member of the Board of Operation Threshold for Buchanan and Black Hawk counties, a Circle Chairman at the First United Methodist Church, and a member of the Church Board of Trustees.
